Misogyny and Gender Bias in Gyms in Delhi

Dear people,
Gyms in Delhi are the most misogynist and gender-biased spaces because the gym owners and the trainers are mostly never trained and have no professional qualifications except for their own body-building experience and streaks and coming from economically deprived backgrounds and seldom well-educated or with any kind of fine civilized demeanour. And it is most deplorable that they find women who hit the gym as props to settle scores’,

generally speaking. This is because mostly coming from a low socio-economic strata and very less educated, they are brought up on a very low image of women in their lives and that is also why they keep trying to probe into the lives of the women who use the gym- they become friendly with these women and extract the personal details of their lives and then begins their game –

they try to hit a raw nerve in women’s lives and start discouraging them so as to their work on their bodies- as if women do not have the right to good health and body and as if it is a sin for a woman to own her body and that how a woman should look and what shape and curves she should have should be defined by a man always- and that as if it was up to a man to decide what kind of a body of a woman he would like’ –

this is only misogyny and a bias that Indian men suffer from – gyms are only a reflection of the social fabric we have. This misogynist game is furthered by the trainer and his coterie by digging into the personal life details of the woman and this is done giving the reason that the trainer would only be able to help her if he came to know every personal detail of the woman, including sexual history, and the age of course (which will be the reason to discourage or encourage the woman without much scientific reasoning)-

let this be known that biological age and the age on the calendar are different. The trainers and their c coterie , that is the gym staff and other gym trainers make a clique against the woman who is targeted and lo and behold , if she happens to be in late thirties or early forties or more than that, she is treated in a very gender-biased manner.

Awareness and Safety in Gyms in Delhi

So the earning and the learning is that avoid hiring a personal trainer in the gym or even at home and if at all you hire one, be very aware of your own body and what your body says to you- listen to it- listen to your own body rather than following the trainer blindly. Avoid drinking water from the cooler of the gym as you might get food poisoning, and avoid using their exercise or yoga mats and take a sanitizer spray to clean the machine that you are using because you can easily be trapped by infection of the skin from the sweat of other people.

Age Bias and Female Fitness in Delhi Gyms

There is another unkind cut that the Indian gyms have – that is of women’s age- the puffed-up trainers in a gym will not tolerate a woman who is not in her twenties but is a matured woman who knows her body and mind and is rich in her cerebral structure- and she dares to workout to her heart’s desire in the gym- one or the other trainer will try to restrict her and the practice is to get-together ie., all the trainers and managers and the owners of the gym and plan and scheme to attack the woman-you are more under attack if you are voluptuous and sexy.

Real Experiences of Women in Gyms in Delhi

I was working out in a gym in Delhi and was strengthening my chest and back with weights and just then a trainer rushed unto me and shooed me away to go to the other side- only because a few young men were working out in that area and it was his belief that I was a threat to their masculinity and that I was out there to seduce them . Then he started pushing me to the wall each day and finally I was forced to leave the gym- I complained to the owner but he sided with the trainer and asked me to leave the gym. So a woman who does not say anything to anybody but is fond of herself and works out without disturbing anybody – becomes an eyesore for the macho misogynist.

Yet another instance was when a woman suffered a serious injury in her spine and the fluid from the vertebral column leaked and it had to be locked. She was saved of a serious surgery just by a hair’s breath, more so out of some fluke of luck but nonetheless she was in excruciating pain and had to miss her office for a few months. The mental trauma was additional because there was a fear of a permanent injury.

In another episode in an Indian gym when I was talking to a trainer- I was just admiring the bodies of Jennifer Lopez and Elizabeth Hurley who celebrate their bodies even at a ripe age – the trainer reacted in a strange manner and felt threatened as if I was showing him some nuclear arsenal- and he at once produced a picture of his when he had a six-pack abdomen and `thunder’ thighs- It only speaks of a lack of understanding of the basics of gender-parity. This only shows that Indian men of this category are of a very conservative mindset wherein they think that they have a monopoly over gym workout and good health. They also think that any single woman who has a mind of her own is a walking seductress or a temptress .

Yet another episode of grave misogyny and a vulgar display of the power of male testosterone was when a trainer while his usual engagement with a female client during exercise narrated to her that he used to train a woman online and that she told him of her sexual deprivation and that a therapist suggested that paid sex’ was available- now please draw your own analysis as to why this trainer told this client in the gym about paid sex’.

Let us have it very clearly that women are not competing with men in the puffing up of their muscles- that is foolish because men and women are different physiologically speaking – and it is the cerebral stuff that she can and is competing in. But men think that the puffing-up of their muscle is something that women can be intimidated with.

Trainers’ Motivation in Gyms in Delhi

And for most of these trainers this is a ripe opportunity to make some moolah and so also to do some social climbing – most of them are seeking money to bail them out of penury and poverty and their breed and USP is what they have invested in their bodies… so it is a raw body with a raw mind that gives in into an easy way to earn much more than their gym job gives them…they are not much educated…barely with a schooling that has just been a formality…

In Delhi …most of these gym trainers and many of the owners of the gyms are from the villages which surround Delhi and they are smitten by the idea of earning lakhs where they earn only about 10 to 15 thousand as gym trainers or even less than that. The gym trainers are thus in a rush to climb the social ladder…they are traditional body builders who have participated in a competition or two or have won a few medals or are failed athletes. There is a special preciousness that they perceive in their masculinity, their libido and the levels of their testosterone which they perceive to be ` way above than an average Indian male’ and that is why their male sexuality is forwarded by them as capital.
